{"id":1684,"date":"2016-06-21T08:26:45","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservationpulse.com\/?p=1684"},"modified":"2021-03-05T07:12:40","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T07:12:40","slug":"2016-06-preservation_hoan_kiem_turtle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indomyanmarconservation.org\/my\/2016-06-preservation_hoan_kiem_turtle\/","title":{"rendered":"Vietnamese scientists are collaborating with German experts to start the preservation by plasticisation of the Hoan Kiem Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei)."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Necropsy and preservation of the Hoan Kiem Turtle started today, the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0of April 2016. \u00a0According to Dr. Phan Ke Long, Director of Vietnam natural museum, the process would take between one and one and a half years to complete as the body of the turtle is large. The German experts reported that the turtles remains were not in good condition and that some of the organs had already decayed. The Asian Turtle Conservation Program participated in preserving tissue specimens from the turtle for future research. \u00a0They also said that cloning the turtle is now impossible since the tissue samples did not meet the required standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoan Kiem lake turtle\u2019s body is being treated by applying plasticisation method, a modern approach in which water and fats within a specimen are replaced by certain plastics.
