On 15th April 2019, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL<\/a>) and the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Indo Myanmar Conservation (IMC) hosted a special one-day workshop at Cuc Phuong National Park, which focussed on the risk of disease during conservation translocations (wild animal releases).<\/p>\n

The event, led by ZSL\u2019s Dr Anthony Sainsbury, was attended by staff from ATP and the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in CPNP, as well as other local rescue centres including Endangered Primate Rescue Center, Vietnam<\/a> and Save Vietnam’s Wildlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the workshop, delegates received an introduction to Disease Risk Analysis and worked through real-life examples of this process. Workshops like this one are valuable training sessions for rescue centres, particularly in Vietnam where the high volume of animals moving around due to the illegal wildlife trade makes disease spread a great concern.<\/p>\n

While the TCC is currently at full capacity and needs to release turtles soon to relieve pressure, the ATP\/TCC recognise the importance of disease risk analysis in the release process and are committed to following certain guidelines for wild releases.<\/p>\n
